Classification Talk - Halyna Tatryn

Halyna started by saying that she loves real estate, and has grown up loving real estate, in fact homes, housing and real estate are her obsession. By age six she was redesigning the flat where she lived, by age nine she wanted to be a realtor. At 13 she wanted to be an architect and at 14 she helped to renovate and recycle her grandparents home [    ]. And at 22 she had the opportunity to build a home for her parents. In her mor adult stage she has earned a degree in civil engineering and also a masters degree in architecture.

Halyna noted that even before the pandemic, North Americans spend 80 – 90% of their time at home; hence the importance of the residential built environment. She clearly has an affection for the mid-century prairie environment, having lived in four different Winnipeg homes, and even between Edmonton and Calgary. She now has a century-old Victoria home in Fairfield but is splitting her time between Victoria and Calgary. She noted that the conversation with clients seeking a new home begins with “where did you grow up – are you a rural or urban person?” as this is fundamental to their desires in a home.

Discussion included the perceived incongruity between the role of the architect and the engineer. “Pattern houses” were also discussed, these being sold at one time from the Sears and Eatons catalogues; in fact Kristi told us that she is living in such a house that was built in 1910 in Fairfield.
